Data sources

Attribution

Every listing says where it came from. Here are the sources we use and the terms that come with them.

Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts

Business names, addresses and industry codes start from the Active Sales Tax Permit Holders dataset published by the Texas Comptroller on data.texas.gov. It is public-domain government data. Addresses in it are mailing addresses, which is one reason we hide street addresses until an owner turns them on.

Map data

Maps are built with Leaflet and show tiles from OpenStreetMap. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.

Foursquare Open Source Places and Overture Maps

We do not use Foursquare OS Places or Overture Maps data yet. When we add either one to fill in websites, hours or locations, their license notices (Apache 2.0 for Foursquare, CDLA Permissive 2.0 or Apache 2.0 for Overture) will appear here, including Foursquare's NOTICE text.

What we never use

No Google Places or Google Maps data. Google's terms do not allow storing it, so it is not in this directory.

Demo listings

Listings marked Demo are fictional and exist only to show how the site works. They use reserved 555 phone numbers and are removed before launch.
